SEO is the art and science of getting a website to the top of the search engines by making the website more relevant. Why is it important to be on the top of the search engines? Take a look at the following statistics:

The top spot in Google for any given search term gets 42% of the clicks

The second spot gets 22% of the clicks

The third spot gets about 10%

The percentage drops as you go further down the page

Only about 20% of people look at the second page of the search results

Almost nobody goes to the third page

With that said, if a term is searched 100 times per day, the site in the first slot will get about 42 clicks. The site on the very bottom may get 2 clicks. Which business will have more visitors and therefore more potential profit? You’ve got it. The site closest to the top of the first page of the search results.

So is SEO worth the effort? That depends. Let’s look at this hypothetical example:

Tim is a locksmith in Boynton Beach Florida. He has a nice looking website that is search engine optimized, and is in position number 2 on the first place of Google for the search term Boynton Beach Locksmith. The term is searched 880 times per month (that is currently an accurate estimate). The second position should receive about 200 clicks (visitors) each month. If one out of 10 visitors decides to use his services, Tim will get 20 jobs per month. His average job is $100. So Tim stands to do about $2000 per month in extra business from this keyword. If he was in the number one position, he would do twice that amount of business. If he was on the bottom of the first page for the same term he may only get one click per month, and do only $100 in business. But all would not lost. Tim also ranks well for the term Locksmith Boynton Beach, Key Cutting Boynton Beach, Change Locks Boynton Beach, Certified Locksmith Boynton Beach, etc. And even though he is not in the top position for any of his terms, he is making a nice living and his website has become his favorite marketing tool.

Imagine that Tim is able to get his site to the top of Google for 5 great keywords. And, he has a respectable site that adds to his credibility and convinces people to do business with him. It could mean the difference between having a full-time thriving business, and looking for a job working for his competitor. Right? Absolutely!

Now imagine Tim gets really aggressive, and has an SEO firm work to get him on the fist page of the search engines in more than one position for each keyword, and also in the sponsored links area of Google. He could find himself as the top locksmith in his area. That boat he was thinking of getting could finally become a reality.

Is the Internet really that powerful? You bet it is.

Does this strategy work for every business? Probably not. If you sell ice cream from a truck it could be a waste of time. But for most business, a proper website and good SEO can make or break a business in today’s world. Do the math and see if it makes sense for your business. If it does, then find a capable web designer with lots of SEO experience and get to work on building your future. Or stand by and wonder why your competition has all the business.

Effingham Web Design – Tips for Building a Site

The home page is the most important page of a website. It is the one page that all your visitors will view. A poor home page can destroy any chance of achieving your website objectives within a few seconds. Some people say you never have a second chance to make a first impression, and that the first impression is made within the 5 seconds of meeting someone. Well, with websites it’s even faster than 5 seconds.

What does your first page say about your site? Does it grab your readers and hold them, drawing them deeper into the site? Or does it say and do nothing and even drive them away to another site? If your website is focused on a single product or service, then launch straight into your main sales copy on the home page. Whereas, if your website contains a number of products or services, then you need to write some copy for your home page that encourages your visitors to click into your products or services pages.

Your Home Page Has 7 to 10 Seconds

That’s all you have to hook your reader and get them to stay on your site. Even for the faster sites, 2 to 3 of those seconds are spent downloading the page. So that leaves you 4 to 8 seconds to get your message across and keep them clicking through your pages.

There are a number of different strategies to make your front page memorable and keep them clicking. Find one that suits you and your site, and exploit it as best you can:

Splash Page Home Pages

Splash pages are front pages that have little more than an animation or clever graphic and a link to enter the site.

Splash pages are a great way to improve standings in search engines, as long as they don’t have automatic refreshes to a new page. When you use a splash page, you can trim the content down to just the bare minimum which improves the quality of the search tags and content keywords. Remember to keep them relevant, as your visitors won’t stay long on your site if the splash page implies a site that isn’t delivered. Be sure to read Splash Pages – Pros and Cons before you commit to a splash page home page.

Navigation Home Pages

Navigation front pages have a lot of information in a small space. They act like a portal to the rest of the site packing in the places your readers can go.

If you have a site with a lot of information, a navigation front page may be the way to go. Often readers don’t come to the front page of large sites looking for specific information, they are looking for the “route” to the information they want. While you could argue that having that information right on the front page would be good, for a large site this isn’t feasible. If your readers already know the site is large, they don’t expect to find the information on the front page, so even when it’s there, they don’t see it.

Information Home Pages

For sites with one specific purpose, an informative front page gets that purpose right out where the reader expects it.

Sites that are focused around a goal, such as selling something, or displaying artwork, or publishing a family photo album are well suited for an Information Front Page. Make that goal the central part of the page. Hook the readers by showing them an overview of the goal and then drawing them in to the details and extra information that supports that goal.

Your Home Page Should Fit Your Site and Your Content

Your front page should suit your site and your skills. A site with very few pages would not make an interesting Navigation Front Page. And a novice Flash designer may not make the best Splash Page. But, you should also think about what you are trying to convey with your site. The front page is where people are going to (in most cases) form their first opinion. If you have a black, cutting edge Splash page, but your site is about “Choosing a Nanny”, you might scare some of your readers away.

Your Home Page Should Be Clear

Your front page should be the clearest page on your site. If people have to guess what it’s about, chances are they will have hit the “Back” button without even trying. Your readers don’t want to have to work to get their information. We are an instant gratification world, and unclear sites become instant losers.
